NFL Films

The Problem

NFL Films productions like Hard Knocks shoot in stadiums with 70,000 fans, outdoor practice fields with wind, locker rooms with simultaneous conversations, and sidelines where collisions happen feet from the microphones. Coaches and players are focused on football, not on being recorded, so the audio has to be captured without getting in the way.

What I Did

Multi-channel wireless on key personnel, with boom and plant mics positioned to capture ambient sound without interfering with play. RF coordination across hundreds of competing wireless devices in a stadium. Redundant recording so nothing is lost when physical contact with equipment is unavoidable.

How It Turned Out

Clean, usable dialogue and natural ambient sound across every episode. The wireless rigs held up through full-contact practices and game days without dropouts.

The Problem

News magazine segments for Nightline demand rapid deployment across unpredictable locations. A single shoot day might require multiple interview setups in different environments, from a quiet office to a noisy street corner, each with different acoustic challenges. Turnaround is fast, editorial standards are high, and there is no time or budget for ADR. The audio captured in the field is the final audio.

What I Did

A compact but comprehensive kit that can be set up and broken down quickly between locations. Wireless lavaliers on every subject with boom backup, IFB for the correspondent and producer, and multi-track ISO recording so post has maximum flexibility. Constant communication with the camera operator on framing to ensure boom placement stays out of shot.

How It Turned Out

The sound team earned a National News Emmy® Award for Outstanding Live Sound Mixing for their work on ABC News Nightline.

NYC Marathon Pre-Race Shows

The Problem

The NYC Marathon pre-race broadcast is a live outdoor show with multiple talent positions spread across a large staging area near the start line. Wind, crowd noise from tens of thousands of runners, and competing wireless signals from other broadcasters, event operations, and public safety all hit at once. No second takes in live television.

What I Did

RF coordination weeks before the event to lock clean frequencies. Multiple wireless channels with backup frequencies pre-programmed for instant switching. Wind protection on every microphone. Redundant monitoring to catch problems before they reach air.

How It Turned Out

Hired back by WABC-TV for NYC Marathon pre-race coverage every year from 2021 through 2025. Different weather, different staging layouts each year, zero on-air audio issues.
